Summary: Ordinance Seeker collects only what is necessary to run your account and process payments. We never sell your personal information or share it with third parties beyond what is required to operate the service.
What This Extension Does
Ordinance Seeker is a Chrome extension that helps members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints find ancestors and descendants in their FamilySearch family tree who have temple ordinances ready to be performed. It does this by automatically navigating and scanning your FamilySearch pedigree tree. A paid subscription is required to use the extension.
Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information:
- Account information — When you create an Ordinance Seeker account, we collect your email address and, if you sign in with Google, your Google display name and profile photo. This is used solely to identify your account and send subscription-related emails.
- FamilySearch account identifier — A normalized version of your FamilySearch display name, used to keep your searches separate from other FamilySearch accounts. This identifier is stored in your account's search data in Firebase Firestore.
- Tree search results — Person IDs, names, lifespan dates, and profile URLs for people found with available ordinances. This is the data you explicitly save by starting a search.
- Subscription status — Your current plan, subscription expiration date, and Stripe customer ID are stored in Firestore to verify your access to the extension.
The extension does not collect your FamilySearch password, your payment card details, your browsing history, or any information from websites other than FamilySearch pedigree views.
How Your Data Is Stored
- Firebase Firestore (cloud) — All saved search results and subscription records are stored in Google Firebase Firestore and synced across your devices. Your data is stored under your account and is not accessible to other users.
- Chrome local storage — A small amount of per-device UI preferences (such as your last selected search and page size) are stored locally. No search results are stored locally.
Payments
Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your payment card details — all payment information is handled directly by Stripe and governed by their privacy policy. We receive only a confirmation that a payment succeeded and the resulting subscription dates.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information. We share data only with the following third-party services necessary to operate Ordinance Seeker:
Data Retention and Deletion
- You can delete individual names or entire searches at any time from within the extension (Open Saved Searches). Deletions sync to all your devices immediately.
- You can permanently delete your Ordinance Seeker account and all associated data directly from the Account page. This removes your account from Firebase Authentication, cancels any active Stripe subscription, and deletes all saved searches from Firestore.
- Uninstalling the extension removes locally stored preferences from your device. Your cloud data is retained until your account is deleted.
- If you need assistance with account deletion, you can also contact us at ordinanceseeker@gmail.com.
Permissions Explained
The extension requests only the permissions necessary for it to function:
- activeTab / tabs — To identify and communicate with open FamilySearch tabs.
- scripting — To run the tree-scanning script on FamilySearch pedigree pages.
- storage / unlimitedStorage — To store per-device UI preferences locally.
- offscreen — To run a hidden background page used for Google sign-in. No content is displayed to the user.
- familysearch.org host permission — The extension only activates on FamilySearch pedigree pages and does not read any other websites.
Children's Privacy
This extension is not directed at children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect any personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
If this privacy policy is updated, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will be changed. Continued use of the extension after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
